About the Castle's History

As an important and famous Bavarian landmark, the castle is listed as a historical monument. This unique estate was originally built by the local count Marquart von Hohenstein in the year 1075. From the 1920s to the 1950s the castle housed the local boarding school, until it was sold to a family who trans- formed it back into a family home. In the mid-19th century it was sold to a noble family who rebuilt it as a private home. When today’s owner acquired the castle in 1987, they began extensive renovations over several years. Because of its important strategic location in Southern Bavaria (also known as the land of castles) the Castle of Marquartstein served the Bavarian rulers as the center of government and administration for the Chiemgau region for centuries. Thus controlled the traffic on one of the most important trade routes leading from the South, from Italy and Tyrol, into Bavaria. Due to the geographic isolation of the Alpine regions, many features of the Old Bavarian language from the Middle High German period have been preserved. All the rooms, in each Wing of the Castle, offer spectacular views of the mountains as far as Lake Chiemsee. All the various wings of the castle can be accessed from the beautiful courtyard. The romantic inner courtyard has a very Southern feeling. Arriving at the top of the castle hill, above the village, one finds the enchanted ensemble of the medieval castle and chapel. There is also a beautiful view into the inner courtyard.

The Position of the Castle is Exceptional 

Set within its own little forest overlooking the valley, close by but detached from the village, with a charming Gothic chapel just outside its gates, the castle is within a ten minute easy reach of the motorway. The center of Munich is an hour away, and Salzburg and its airport just 30 minutes. Excellent hospitals and rehab institutions are close by. The East Wing & Chapel

The chapel, built around the time of the construction of the main buildings, does not form part of the property and is managed by the church. Improvements & Upgrades

Exceptionally, the protection refers to its outside walls only, not to the interior of the rooms, a great advantage that makes any changes to the interior possible. The overall condition of the castle, including the roofs, is excellent as the owners have constantly upgraded the state of the buildings and insured that there is no further need for major renovations. These included a new heating system (central heating in all the rooms), state-of-the-art electrics, new windows, luxurious bathrooms, modern kitchens, a great wine cellar, as well as a superb Turkish bath with steam room, hot stone and plunge pool.
